Looking Back-Looking Forward (please read)

As far as I know I could be half way through my time with Dembre. Seven months in, seven months to go! Sure some people might say that I have a long time left, but I don't.... and I'm not scared to face it. When I took on Dembre at the end of last May, I knew that he'd be part of my life for the next year and a half. I knew that a whatever I did with him could make a difference between passing and failing. I knew that I would grow to love that little black puppy so much that giving him up would rip me apart. Yet somehow on that day in May I held a warm bundle of fur in my arms. That bundle of fur has been my mission; my dream; part of who I am! I think God placed Dembre in my life to teach me what it is to be selfless and what it is to change a life!
Looking forward, I'm excited about all the adventures that Dembre and I will still have over the next 7-10 months! There's going to be turn-in and I'm going to face it! Sure I'm going to cry my eyes out ( yes guys do that too)! I'm going to be SO proud of Dembre and I'm going to remember everything that I've taught him and everything that he's taught me. That bond will be broken, but we will never forget each other. I hope to hold in my arms another adorable puppy; another assignment that will change somebody's life. Even in that day of pain and change I want to keep going and do what I have just finished over again. I hope to do it over and over and change the lives of as many people as I possibly can.

This is the puppy who has taught me to love...

This is the puppy who has taught me to be patient...

This is the puppy who has taught me what it is to be selfless...

This is the puppy who has been with me through laughter and tears; through thick and thin...

This is the puppy that has taught what it is to have vision...

THIS IS THE PUPPY I LOVE!!!! THIS IS MY MIRACULOUS JOURNEY!!!!

  1. I know exactly how you feel! I have felt the same way with all of my pups, and I always get a new pup the day I turn in my current pup. It helps fill the void in my heart :( But you know something? The bond you have with Dembre will never be broken. I recently saw the first guide dog I raised and her handler. I had not seen them in several years, since their graduation. But you know what? That dog remembered me and she went nuts when she realized who I was. Once she hear my voice it was all over! Just know that the bond is never broken and they don't forget you! One of my favorite sayings is "Inside of every Guide Dog is a heart of a puppy raiser". It is so true.

  2. Isn't it amazing how much these pups change our lives, as well as the lives of their eventual owners/graduates? And Vienna's raiser is right--they NEVER forget! Not even our bull-in-a-china-shop, never-met-a-stranger Penelope forgot; when we went up to pick her up from CCI, she forgot EVERYTHING as soon she heard our voices! Which I guess means we get to make a difference on their lives too. Pretty awesome! :)
