So Strange

This Friday is the May CCI graduation! I should be there! The thing that's strange is that this graduation is the last graduation until Dembre turns-in! It's really strange! I knew it was coming, but it's another milestone that makes me feel dizzy. I also thinks it's weird because it's almost half way through May and when June comes around I'm supposed to contact CCI to let them know that I want to get a new pup! It almost gives me the shivers! I'm so proud of Dembre, but am I ready to say goodbye and is he well enough trained. Though, he still needs work, I think that we're doing well. He knows all the commands, but needs a lot more work on a couple. He still needs quite a bit of manner work, but I was proud yesterday because I walked him downtown in a small city near where we live and even though we had to cross the busy street four or five times and had semi trucks and lots of other cars making noise he stayed calm and didn't even act nervous once! We're getting there.

  1. Hi Y'all,

I have no words of wisdom to share with you as time draws near for Dembre to go on to his adult life as a service dog.

All my life we raised and trained horses. They were born and eventually were sold. My husband and I have performance horses. Some horses stayed for years and others came and went. Someplace along the way I learned to build a wall between myself and the horses. The fact that they were going on and not ending their life made it easier.

That said, I don't know if I could do the same with a dog that spent its every waking minute with me.

I'll be thinking of you both and keeping you in my prayers.

  2. Thanks so much!
I think that puppy raisers apply to raise dogs knowing that they are going to leave. It's going to break my heart for awhile, but it's not permanently painful. It's so much better to know that either you're dog will serve someone or will be a pet. It's a lot harder actually losing a dog to death.

Keep your fingers crossed for Micron at CCI dog college.

  5. I'll be praying that he makes it! It looks like you've done a great job with him and Inga graduated, which is awesome for a first dog!
