3 Years Later (Remembering the journey)

This week I am celebrating my 3rd year since picking up my very first CCI puppy. On May 28th 2010 a rather awkward 13 year old with a bowl cut and a big smile walked through the doors of the doors of Canine Companions' North Central regional center.

That day I met Dembre... I handsome, adorable, loveable black Labrador Retriever/Golden Retriever cross. I fell in love that day- with CCI and with that 7 week old puppy. He changed my life.

Yep that was me.
Over the next year and a half I bonded with a large number of other puppy raisers through this blog and at CCI classes and events. I dedicated a lot of my time to trying my best to bring up that little puppy to be a service dog that could change a life.

In 2011 I hugged that puppy who had changed my life a rather surreal farewell, put him in CCI's kennel and then left. My time with Dembre was over and I rested in that, hoping that someday that puppy would be a super hero.

A week later I started a new endeavor, one that taught me and stretched me and transformed me. that endeavor is named Hobart II. He came in the form of a bundle of yellow energy.
He wasn't quite as much of a dreamy dog as Dembre was. He was harder to work with and harder to understand and yet we bonded in a special way that is only possible between a puppy raiser and his charge.

In February, after 6 months of anticipation, Dembre graduated to go be a full time service dog in Minnesota. I proudly handed him over to Imelda realizing that at this point Dembre had a new life and a fulfilled mission. He was the super hero I had helped raise up.

Hobart's struggles continued and I, in the business of life, struggled to maintain control and to do my best as he grew older. Finally, October came with only one month left to work with my pup and so we kicked it into high gear and worked as hard as we could to prepare him for turn-in. A month later, feeling little more prepared, I patted Hobart on the head and left him, yet again hoping that by some chance he could be just like Dembre. There was no 3rd puppy to take home so I went on trying to live a "normal life.

Two months later I got a call. This call tore me to pieces and yet in other ways brought a sense of clarity. Hobart was released from the service dog program to become a pet. With a little bit of time we found him a home with a new loving family in North Carolina.

I drove out to meet part of his new family and wit a few tears and a feeling of happiness watched him jump into the car of his new family to head to a new home. Now he gets wonderful attention and is free to visit the beach on the weekends, fulfilling all of his puppyhood dreams and with a little big of thought I rested in the fact that he had gone home.

Then it all hit me. I waited patiently for a chance for puppy #3 but amidst the business of life none arose. I tried to ignore the feeling, the longing to change more lives, but it didn't go away and finally I had to confront it. What's next?

CCI has been my home, community, and much of my life over these last 3 years and I've loved pretty much every second of it. All of you have been amazing and I want to thank you as you've helped me learn grow and read what I've had to say through thick and think of life.

I've been talking about getting a third puppy for awhile now, but as of today that seems unlikely to happen in the next year. Everything in side of me never wants to let go of this miraculous journey that I have been a part of and have learned from, but sometimes change is necessary.

Just about now I was planning on bringing home a third pup, but amidst life I realized that maybe this isn't the season to make this decision. This summer I'll be headed to Russia for a month, and most of the rest of the summer will be filled with travel, business and alas few chances to train a dog.

I was looking at my calender and began to truly understand that life changes. Three years ago I was free to dedicate everything I had to the mission of CCI and to help raise extraordinary dogs for extraordinary people. It's my dream. Since I was little I've wanted to be a part of something big, but as I said life changes.

This is all a long and sorrowful way to say that if there's a puppy #3 (which I pray that there is) it will most likely not be in the near future. The more and more I've truly appreciated what I've been able to do as a puppy raiser, the more I've come to see that each puppy takes time, energy, and care that I seem to be lacking at the moment.

All of this may be emotional rambling or reminiscent fluff, but to me it's my life. Since I hit my teenage years I've always had a puppy by my side to help me get through and be who I am. Sometimes I don't understand why God lets things change. I hate it; I really do. All I wanted to do was be where I am... happy, content and in love with the mission of Canine Companions for Independence.

At the end of it all I (more than ever) appreciate everything God has done and all you have done. Whether or not my future holds extensive work with CCI, I plan on volunteering to temporarily foster dogs and to puppy sit to keep connected with the amazing work that CCI is doing. As I finish my Sophomore year of high school I look back and thank God that I took advantage of the life I've been given instead of simply embracing complacency.

THANK YOU all for being a part of my journey. No matter where I go, I look to follow God's lead. Over this last year He has lead me to work with a missions center in Virginia, travel throughout the Eastern part of the US speaking on college campuses about the value of human life, and to be a major part of my community. I trust He can use me this summer in Russia and wherever I am.

This is the hardest post I have ever had to write. I will continue to write as much as possible and will continue to pray that within the puppy raising circles God does great things.

With love, hope, and a heavy heart

Remember when......

Time slips away quietly. It sneaks past us all and suddenly we think... Where has the time gone?

this is a precious moment :)
I find myself asking that now! I'm excited that friends Mark and Deb get to watch their first puppy, Ansel, who turned in with Dembre graduate! This gives me a reality check. Wasn't it just yesterday that we were talking about turn-in and graduation... the bright future. The thing that is strange is that I talk about the future, but so easily forget how fast the time flies... soaring away before I even know it's there.

Two things sunk in recently... Dembre is actually fulfilling his purpose, and no matter how many times I said it, it seemed strange until now... somehow surreal. and secondly that Hobart is now 10 months old and not so far from turn-in. I'll be traveling for a lot of the summer, which means I'll be apart from Hobart and before I know it.... BOOM it'll be turn-in.

Something inside me screams, "Stop! This can't be happening. What happened to that little puppy? Those perfect summer days playing in the yard?" but another voice speaks softly. "This is what is supposed to happen... it's destiny and this is your chance to change a life."

was that almost two years ago already?
I'm embracing the second one... no matter how fast the time moves or how much I forget that it's going... I, no all of us, need to concentrate on what really matters. We can so easily make life into a routine without any joy to it... any picture perfect moments, but I urge you to take time to live NOW and to make memories. There's only so much time and it's ours to use wisely! Today is a gift from God!

Thoughts on Dembre's Graduation

Most of you probably saw my last post about Dembre graduating! I thought I'd come back and touch more on the emotional end of the graduation experience.

Until the moment I met Imelda the fact that Dembre was a service dog was hard to get a handle on. I had imagined that day for so long. The day that I picked up that cute little ball of fur (May 28th, 2010) I told him that I was going to try to make him graduate. I did and I guess it payed off. It's so amazing to be surrounded by your supportive friends and be holding the leash of the puppy that you spent the last 15 months loving and caring for and then getting to say, "Dembre is yours!"

I am so proud and thankful that I get to be part of such and amazing program as CCI
The thing that I love most about puppy raising from the eyes of someone who has had a puppy graduate is that instead of spending time and energy to better the lives of hundreds or thousands of people I get to put my life into raising one puppy who will drastically change the life of one person. I didn't get to watch Dembre do much for Imelda, but from what she's told me he provides a lot of independence. I love that I get to impact the world one team at a time. A lot of people are concerned about the numbers reached. For a puppy raiser the best possible feeling you could ever get is getting to watch the one puppy you raised become the "best friend" of one person.
It's amazing, especially watching Dembre, to watch the emotion in dogs that so many people cannot see

You might believe that now that I've seen puppy number one graduate and am only ten months away from saying goodbye to number two that I'm done, because I've gotten to see one life changed. I don't only want to change one life, but I want to change one life at a time. It's a personal thing (thankfully CCI sees it that way) and CCI allows us to become part of our puppy's partner's life.

I have helped people in other ways, but there is none that seems more amazing than this. I am now officially "addicted to puppy raising" or as I've heard it said, "Puppy raising is like eating potato chips. You can never just have one."

Now more than ever I look forward to turning in Hobart and picking up pup #3, raising puppy #3 and then picking up puppy #4. It's a beautiful thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DEMBRE'S GRADUATION (THE OFFICIAL POST)

Dembre graduated! It has been one of the best days of my life. First we got to the rec center where they hold the graduations and got to take Dembre out and get a bunch of pics (which you'll see below). Then we handed Dembre back to his trainer and went to lunch with his new partner, Imelda. She is one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met and she makes the most perfect match with Dembre. She loves him and he returns that emotion quite clearly. It was so amazing to hear her stories about him and all the things that he does for her and then getting to share photos and stories from my time with Dembre. Imelda lives a quiet life of prayer, which is great because we have our faith in common. Before hand I was scared that there wouldn't be enough to say, but that wasn't the case. Our hour long lunch flew by and was gone before I knew it!
So proud of that boy!!!!!!!

Then came the ceremony! I got Dembre back and walked him around to meet more of my friends and say "hi." Both of my grand mothers came as well as three families that are friends of ours. Then I got to walk up and hook Dembre's leash on to Imelda's wheelchair and give her a hug. I got to watch some of my wonderful friends turn-in their dogs and hand over their dogs at graduation! It was SO SO SO amazing!

You cannot describe the feeling of utter fulfillment and happiness when you get to hand over that leash and say, "here's your puppy." The moment I saw Dembre I knew he wasn't mine. He looked and looked for Imelda when I had him, because she's his new leader. It's great!
one more "lap"

Handsome as ever
The other amazing thing about graduation was all the support that I received. I can't recall how many of my wonderful CCI puppy raising friends came up to me and gave me a hug and said that they were so very proud of Dembre and I. All of my CCI mentors were there cheering me on and it was so encouraging. I even got quite a few CCI staff members saying that they were so excited for me. It's indescribable. Watching all these people I respect so much tell me how much the care!!!! I want to thank all of you readers for all your support via comments and sharing. Many of you have watched Dembre grow up from the time he was 2 months old and I thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement.
Reunited once more
Me and my boys!!!

Thanks again for everything!!!!!!

Dembre (Advanced Training Day 2) Hobart (update)

It's Thursday. That means that Dembre is beginning day two of AT today! Tomorrow we'll know if he makes a match! I'm praying and hoping that he does. I'm very, very nervous/ excited. He's so close. It's only 8 days until he should be graduating. *heart pounding*. Wow! I never thought it would sneak up on me like this! I'm just imagining the people he's working with and the stuff that he's doing! It's simply amazing that I might be handing the puppy that I raised over to his new handler in a matter of a week.

August 17th, 2011

Hobart has been sick! Poor guy! He's been feeling really bad. Thankfully he is getting back to normal and is now eating again. I was scared that something was really wrong, but he seems to be returning to his healthy state of being.

Sooooooo Tired

Exciting News for Dembre!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday we got a call from CCI! No, it wasn't a release call. It was Dembre's final AT report via phone!

His trainer said that he's a really good dog and that he was very strong on his commands coming in to AT and that she really appreciated our effort. We were informed that this team training group consists of 6 facility dogs and 6 successor service dogs! "Successor teams" are SD teams with a handler (or human partner) who has had a CCI dog in the past. Most of them have a CCI service dog that is either retired or has passed away!

Dembre's trainer told us that Dembre is currently (with nothing official) slotted for a service dog match!!!! It also sounded like his back up match was also as a service dog! She said that he could go either way, though. It's amazing to think that they already have a good idea of who he might go to!!!!

I'll say that I'm so excited that the first puppy that I raised is doing so well! I'm SO PROUD of him! I'm extremely happy that he's so close to graduation (unless he gets held over until may)!

I'm really excited to meet his new partner (hopefully in a few weeks)!!!!!!!!

I don't know if I really thought that Dembre would go this far when I put his cape on for the first time

Dembre News, Hobart's Puppy Class, Weigh-in, etc...

I have a lot to say :D

We got Dembre's FINAL WRITTEN report!!!! At the end of next month we will get his final report via the phone (as long as he has not been released by that time).

His report was really good!!!!! He is officially working on all of his commands with his handler on foot and in a wheelchair. According to the report, "Dembre is responsive to commands and responds to correction for distractions." Once again he has mounted other dogs in the play yard, but it has decreased and is not a concern. If Dembre graduates he will graduate on Friday, February, 17th. That's not very far away!!!!

I also got to say "hi" to Dembre at class today! His kennel mate switched.... again, so he is with Gallaghar II. It took me a minute to tell the two apart, but one of the dogs was more excited to see me and came to Dembre's name so I figured it out which dog he was. I got to give him a hug and tell him that I'm so very proud of him. I can't wait to see him.... if it's God's will... GRADUATE AS A SERVICE DOG!!!!!!

I turned in Mr. Dembre in August and now four months later he's SO close to graduation

I also went to class at CCI today (for the first time in five weeks) and picked up Hobart from his puppy sitter. Connie, who puppy sat him for me, said that she liked him and thought he was a "good dog" in CCI terms. That's good for me to hear, because it's been hard for me to see Hobart as a good dog. I'm really excited that a puppy raiser on number 21 can say that my 2nd pup is doing fine!

It was really nice to have class and catch up with my CCI friends! I enjoyed encouragement from other puppy raisers and lots of good training tips! I've really missed not being able to get a reality check from other, more experienced raisers.

now..... last and definitely least..... Hobart now ways 50 lbs. !!!!!

Hobart on day one (2 months)

Hobart last week (5 months)

So Strange

This Friday is the May CCI graduation! I should be there! The thing that's strange is that this graduation is the last graduation until Dembre turns-in! It's really strange! I knew it was coming, but it's another milestone that makes me feel dizzy. I also thinks it's weird because it's almost half way through May and when June comes around I'm supposed to contact CCI to let them know that I want to get a new pup! It almost gives me the shivers! I'm so proud of Dembre, but am I ready to say goodbye and is he well enough trained. Though, he still needs work, I think that we're doing well. He knows all the commands, but needs a lot more work on a couple. He still needs quite a bit of manner work, but I was proud yesterday because I walked him downtown in a small city near where we live and even though we had to cross the busy street four or five times and had semi trucks and lots of other cars making noise he stayed calm and didn't even act nervous once! We're getting there.

Happily Ever After (yet another long post)

Humans tend to want life to be a fairy tale. We know there will be hard times, but we want our story to end with, "happily ever after." Sadly many stories don't have happy endings.

I was contemplating that idea from a puppy raiser's perspective. Awhile back I watched a Youtube video on a puppy raiser out in CA. Somebody commented on the video and said something like, "That's so stupid. At the end you have to give away the dog. I would never do that." Well, is that end of the of the story? Do we just give away the dog? That's it? The end? I would say that it's rather obvious that giving up the puppy is not the end but just another step of the journey. It's different for different service and guide dog organizations, but for CCI we know within 6-9 months whether or not our puppy's destiny is to become a service dog or to become a beloved pet. Though I think that passing rate has a lot to do with how the puppy raiser trains the dog, some dogs just don't have what it takes to be a working dog. Every once in awhile a CCI release dog will go on to become Search & Rescue or other working dog. But often the puppy enjoys the life of a pet dog, remaining with the puppy raiser or someone else who will give the dog loving care. I truly hope that Dembre becomes an assistance dog, but if he becomes a pet I know that he will be happy. I would have a hard time with just giving up my dog and never hearing what happened to him, but I know that fulfillment comes when you hand the leash of the puppy you raised to his new master. It's still hard, but that's the goal right from the start. I'm not saying that graduation or release day is the end, because it's not, not for the puppy and not for the puppy raiser!!! If Dembre becomes a pet then he will enjoy the life of any other pet dog. He can enjoy just being a dog, a very well behaved dog at that, but a dog. That seems like a happy ending to me!The most hoped for career is that of the service dog. The puppy raiser raises the puppy to hopefully become a service dog! For a graduate team, graduation day is the start of a new life together. It's two separate stories coming together to be one. The story of the man, woman or child graduating could have been tragic, difficult, lonely. The story of the CCI service dog is, for the most part, a story of dedication, of love poured into one special puppy, of the dreams of the puppy raiser. On graduation day the dreams of the puppy raiser are fulfilled. On graduation day the dreams of the the graduate are fulfilled. Though the puppy raiser may miss the puppy they know that the puppy that they love has started a new journey-- a new chapter of life.
                                                                              ~ ~ ~
At the very end of the story there is a loving person with tears in their eyes saying goodbye to a very special friend. There is also a puppy raiser who, with tears of sadness, recalls the memories of the puppy that they raised. Is that a happy ending? I'd say yes. Sure at the end the faithful servant, the loving dog, passes over the rainbow bridge, but that is the end of every story. Even if the dog had left the world sick and tired, their last memories are probably ones of a breeder caretaker, a puppy raiser, a trainer, a CCI graduate and friend, and many other people who the dog had loved and had loved the dog. That is a happy ending!!!!

Reflections on the Future

I attended CCI's February Team Training Graduation ceremony. It was the largest graduation that North Central has ever had... and it was amazing. I got to watch friends walk up to the stage with tears in their eyes and hand 18 months of their hard work over to a new life and new handler. There were tears in my eyes as I watched puppy raiser after puppy raiser walk up onto the stage to be honored for raising a puppy. I never realized how it really was. People have told me about graduations, but no words can truly tell the beauty of watching the human-dog bond put into action.

I was surprised at how excited the dogs were when the got handed from puppy raiser to recipient. I guess CCI matches the teams well. I was thrilled to see the puppy raisers interactions with the recipients. Somehow to see the tears of joy in the eyes of the puppy raisers that had waited for graduation day for months and the excitement and thankfulness of the recipient went right to my heart. After seeing that, the thoughts of turn-in and losing the dog I'm raising have been forgotten and the thoughts of getting to hand Dembre over to a different handler and to see them start their new life together makes it more than worth it.

Turn-in was different than I had thought before. Somehow it seems easier to walk up to the stage with all the other puppy raisers and receive a rose. For every puppy raiser turn-in is a big deal so you really don't need to make it a bigger one. CCI didn't. They honored each and every puppy raiser with a matriculating dog, but didn't request them to do any more than walk up and receive a flower. That's good enough for me, because I know during the ceremony I'll be crying to hard to talk. Turn-in will come and I look forward to seeing Dembre enter a new chapter of his life and also look forward to getting another puppy and starting a new chapter of my own life.
